Definition
The Census Bureau will focus this quarterly services survey on information and technology-related service industries. These were include information; professional, scientific and technical services; administrative & support services; and waste management and remediation services. These sectors correspond to three NAICS sectors (51, 54, and 56). The Quarterly Services Survey produces estimates of total operating revenue and the percentage of revenue by class of customer.

Why Do Investors Care?
These sectors fuel productivity gains and they include growth areas as well as industries sensitive to changes in the business cycle. These include telecommunications, software publishing, computer systems design, advertising, broadcasting and employment services. According to the Census Bureau, these three sectors account for roughly 15 percent of GDP.
The service sector is an important part of the economy but until now, information regarding the service sector has been scarce. According to ex-Fed chairman Alan Greenspan, "The Census Bureau's new Quarterly Services Survey will give the nation valuable data and will help ensure that our economic statistics continue to support private sector decision making and public policy."
