Australian Stock Exchange
The ASX (Australian Stock Exchange Limited) was formed in 1987 by legislation of the Australian Parliament which six independent stock exchanges that formerly operated in the state capital cities to combine. Each of those exchanges had a history of share trading dating back to the 19th century.
All Ordinaries
Established in January 1980, the All Ordinaries is the oldest stock index in Australia, so called because it contains nearly all ordinary (or common) shares listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). The market capitalization of the companies included in the index amounts to over 95 percent of the value of all shares listed on the ASX.

The All Ordinaries steady march north has been disrupted by market turbulence but had managed to set new all time highs. The index was down 2.7 percent in November but is up a healthy 16.9 percent for the first 11 months of 2007.
